Description: I was the lead instructor for an introductory public speaking course that was designed and administered by Jodi Cohen, the Course Coordinator. I helped 45 undergraduate students improve their ability to research and communicate effectively and ethically. For the primary assignment, I guided students in researching policy issues they selected, which ranged from Cornell’s Title IX policy regarding the treatment of sexual assault victims to the commercialization of space, and in preparing for the delivery of informative and persuasive speeches on their issues over the course of the semester. I am proud to say that two of my students placed in the top five out of approximately 200 students who participated in a speech contest sponsored by Cornell’s Department of Communication.

GOVT 1101 Public Opinion, Mass Media and Post-9/11 U.S. Foreign Policy | Fall 2016
John S. Knight Institute and Department of Government, Cornell University
Syllabus | Student Evaluations

Description: I designed and served as the instructor for a writing course for first-year students with Cornell’s innovative and award winning writing program, John S. Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines. The course explored the complex relationship between contemporary U.S. foreign policy, public opinion and the mass media, and used this topic as a vehicle for developing students’ writing abilities. Through the readings, class discussions and writing assignments, students improved their ability to engage contentious political debates in a civil, logical, and historically- and conceptually-informed manner. By guiding students through the writing lessons and assignments, I helped students improve their ability to conceive, develop and revise their arguments through a multi-faceted writing process that involved researching, diagramming and outlining arguments, writing, revising and peer-review.
